Zanzibar: where the ocean kisses the sky

Welcome to Zanzibar

Chasing sandbanks and sunsets with Safari Blue

Geography & Location

Zanzibar is an archipelago off the east coast of Tanzania, in the Indian Ocean.

It consists mainly of two large islands: Unguja (often referred to as Zanzibar Island) and Pemba, along with many smaller islets.

The capital is Zanzibar City, and its historic center is Stone Town, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

ย

History

Zanzibar has a rich history as a major trading hub, especially in the 18th and 19th centuries, known for spice trading (especially cloves) and the slave trade.

It was once ruled by Oman, and the Sultan of Oman even moved his capital to Zanzibar in the 19th century.

Zanzibar gained independence from Britain in 1963 and merged with Tanganyika in 1964 to form the United Republic of Tanzania.
